The obverse depicts the former president of South Africa, Paul Kruger. His image is surrounded by the text 'Sud - Afrika' and 'South Africa', the names of the country in his two native languages, Afrikaans and English.
The reverse features a spring side antelope galloping on the grass (antelope jumper). Above the animal is the inscription 'KRUGERRAND'. At the bottom is the text "FYNGOUD", meaning "pure gold", and information on the weight of the coin. The year of issue is struck in the centre of the reverse, with the first two digits visible on the left side spring and the last two on the right side. The Krugerrand has no denomination indicated. In this way, the intention was to express the value of the coins by relating the bullion content given on the reverse to the prevailing market price of gold.
