It turns out that climate warming and natural disasters (hurricanes, melting glaciers) also have a negative impact on monuments. Venice, which was flooded this year, as well as Byzantium, Turkey and Ferrara, which were similarly damaged, were painfully aware of this.

The poor condition of Venetian monuments

It may be that in a few years Byzantine mosaics, Renaissance cities and masterpieces of art will only be available online or in albums of the most beautiful monuments. Also at risk are Tunisia with its archaeological stations (Cartage, Sabrata) as well as Tel Aviv famous for its modern architecture.

Thus, Italy could lose 14 monuments and Greece 'only' four. Researchers from the German University of Kiel are wondering what can be done to stop the progressive destruction of cultural pearls. One solution seems to be visualisation created with the Google Earth satellite and its use in the most endangered areas. For now, the best idea is to admire live those monuments that may soon be destroyed.
