Józef Mehoffer was a Polish painter, stained-glass artist, one of the most outstanding representatives of Young Poland. He studied at many universities: at the Kraków School of Fine Arts, at universities in Vienna (University and Academy) and in Paris (Academie Colarossi and École des Beaux-Arts). This artist was a master of Art Nouveau decorativeness. He designed many utility objects: covers, placards, banknotes, vignettes. Apart from that, he created artistic graphics, painted easel pictures and drew portraits with a crayon. Together with Stanisław Wyspiański, he realised Jan Matejko's polychromies in St Mary's Church in Kraków. Kraków is home to the Mehoffer House, a branch of the National Museum.
