About the department

Collecting works of old art is definitely not a simple activity. It requires extensive knowledge on the part of the collector. At the very beginning, it is worth realizing what period of time we are interested in. In our auction house, we mainly offer paintings from the late nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century. In Poland, the works of those years are the absolute quintessence of the painting canon. These are the motifs known and liked by Polish collectors, thanks to which they continue to enjoy unflagging interest.

Old art auctions

The Department of Old Art coordinates auctions that are very important to us in the field of old art. It is an important cultural heritage, and we are honored to help promote it by organizing auctions where you can purchase works by exceptional Polish and foreign artists. At our auctions, we had the opportunity to host the works of such names as: Mela Muter, Olga Boznańska, Alicja Halicka, Alfons Karpiński, Wlastimil Hoffman, Felicjan Szczęsny-Kowarski, Leon Wyczółkowski and Stanisław Witkiewicz. They are outstanding artists, and their paintings are desired by collectors all over Poland.

Investment in old art

Why is it worth investing in works of old art? There are at least a couple of reasons. First of all - because of its historical value. The works of these outstanding artists are witnesses to our history and only thanks to them we can see a substitute of what people used to be and what Poland used to be. Secondly - because of their exceptional aesthetic value. Works of old art will decorate any interior, enchanting guests with their mere presence. The highest artistry of painting is something that definitely characterizes the paintings present in our auction house. Third - thanks to the collector's value. For hundreds of years, art has been a common choice among people who want to diversify their capital. The value of works of art only increases over time, and it is resistant to phenomena such as inflation, for example. Often you can also make money on them, because regardless of the times, the classic will always be in the price.

It is worth mentioning that in Poland works from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries are defined as old art. On the other hand, in Western Europe and the United States, works from earlier periods are old art, usually in the 15th and 16th centuries. Why is this such a big difference? In our country, unfortunately, not many works of art from the previous years have survived, which is why they are rarely seen at auctions, and if they are, very rarely. That is why what in Poland belongs to the canon and classics in the West is understood more as modernity. Of course, it does not change the fact that the paintings from the period that we call old art are unique in every respect.

In our auction house you will find only the most interesting canvases of old art, which we carefully prepare for each auction. If you have any questions about the action or the images themselves, please do not hesitate to contact us. Contact details can be found on our website in the Contact tab.
