Ebenist is a maker of veneered and marquetry-decorated furniture. The name of the profession derives from ébenè, a French word that means ebony. Originally, the ebenist made furniture from ebony.
History of ebenists
Ebenists are descended from carpenters. They became more independent at the end of the 16th century when it became fashionable to use exotic woods in luxury furniture. The ebenists initially decorated their wares with bas-reliefs or marquetry in exotic woods. Later, they expanded the language of artistic decoration to include fittings, marquetry, or veneer.
The most famous ebenists include Charles André Boulle, Jean Henri Riesener or Jean-François Oeben.
