A few years ago, Stefan Gierowski prepared his monograph in collaboration with the Italian publishing house Skira. Instead of grouping his works chronologically, he arranged them thematically according to headings such as ‘Light and Colour’, 'Concepts', ‘Beginning and End’.
In May this year, the artist would have celebrated his 100th birthday. To mark the occasion, the Stefan Gierowski Foundation has prepared an exhibition entitled ‘Painting is a Joy – Even Priming the Canvas is a Great Celebration!’ arranged according to how Gierowski himself perceived his work, i.e. according to the guidelines for Skira.
The individual parts of the exhibition, which will be on view at the foundation's headquarters at Plac Dąbrowskiego in Warsaw, are also accompanied by quotes by the artist taken from the aforementioned publication. There we will see 45 oil paintings.
We could see the first version of the exhibition on a smaller scale at the Mark Rothko Art Center in the Latvian town of Dyneburg in 2023. If Warsaw is not on your itinerary, another exhibition celebrating the anniversary is on at the Old Town Hall in Toruń. We will be saying goodbye to both exhibitions this autumn.
