The shock after seeing the first exhibition of the Fauves at the Autumn Salon in Paris in 1905 was so great that one critic called the painters "wild beasts", in French "Les Fauves". From then on the name "Fauves" was attached to them. Their joint activity lasted a very short time, they were created between 1905 and 1907.

The most important features of Fauvism

The painters of the new direction concentrated on the power of colour, using it at their own discretion, without paying attention to true colours. They dispensed with chiaroscuro and plastic modelling. The paintings differed in some important details, some Fauvists used very contrasting colours, others less (e.g. Maurice de Vlaminck), Raoul Dufy emphasized colours with a black outline.

The subject of the compositions of "predators, wild animals" was very varied, but in the first place, it was supposed to affect the senses of the audience. The style included portraits, nudes, landscapes and still lives. The artists were partly influenced by artists such as Cézanne, van Gogh, Gauguin and various Neo-Impressionists.

Famous artists

The most famous artists certainly include André Derain (1880-1954), Henri Matisse (1869-1954), Maurice de Vlaminck (1876-1958) and Raoul Dufy (1877-1953). The style of the latter is characterized by an affirmation of life, sensuality and fine line. He mainly used watercolours. The work by Raoul Dufy entitled "Bateaux et Baigneuse" ("Boats and bathers") will be exhibited at an auction of early art at our auction house. This auction will take place from 19-22 May this year on the Artbidy website.
