Igor Mitoraj. A Pole with an Italian Heart
A biography of the world-renowned sculptor.
The author traces the personal and artistic fate of Poland's most famous sculptor, beginning with his birth in 1944 in Oederan, Germany, where his mother was deported for forced labor, through his dramatic childhood and adolescence, including his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków under the supervision of Tadeusz Kantor, his time spent in Paris, which proved groundbreaking and involved not only hard work but also his first exhibitions and successes, and finally his Italian period – in the most important place of his choice, the town of Pietrasanta in Tuscany. Stabro's painting is complemented by a moving description of the sculptor's death in Provence in 2014.
Agnieszka Stabro retraces the steps of Igor Mitoraj, seeking answers to questions about the sources of his sculptural genius in places that were significant in his life. To supplement the narrative, she interviewed people who knew Igor not only professionally but also personally. The uniqueness of this biography lies in the author's approach to her subject – Stabro paints a very personal portrait of the artist: what matters to her is not only the greatness of his work, but also the fact that behind his mask of genius lay a warm, kind man who shared a very close bond with his mother and friends.
