Twenty-one of Modigliani’s paintings, shown in Genoa last year, are not authentic.

Modigliani's primitive forgeries

Isabella Quattrocchci said that seven drawings and eight oil paintings by Modigliani and six oil paintings attributed to his friend, Moise Kisling, were forgeries. The paintings were lent by private collectors and museums in Italy, Switzerland, Israel, Argentina and the United States.

Prepared report

The report written for prosecutors in Genoa says that the works had been "crudely forged, both in terms of style and pigments." Moreover, according to Quattrocchi, the frames come "from countries in Eastern Europe and the United States, and cannot be linked to Modigliani’s context or historical period".

Three people are under investigation, but no one has been charged. The first one is the curator of the Palazzo Ducale exhibition – Rudy Chiappini who says that all the paintings in the exhibition had been included in catalogs of Modigliani’s works, and had been exhibited before. The second one is Massimo Vitta Zelman, the president of the Mondo Mostre Skira company which organized the Modigliani show and the last one is Joseph Guttmann, a US dealer who probably loaned some of the works.
