In 1977 Hanna Rudzka-Cybisowa (1897-1988) was recognized as one of the most outstanding female painters in world art by the "Woman in Art" publication. Interestingly enough, she was also the first woman to hold a professorial post at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow. What did she paint, and what did her career looked like? We will try to answer these questions in the following article.

Hanna Rudzka-Cybisowa - from Mława to Paris

Born in 1897 in Mława, Hanna Rudzka began to show artistic talent as a child. Thanks to the persistence of her mother, who demanded that her father give his daughter permission to study art, the young woman was able to study at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts in the studio of Miłosz Kotarbiński. Unfortunately, in 1920 Rudzka was forced to discontinue her education for financial reasons, at which point her cousin, Dr Feliks Hilchen, came to her aid and financed her studies at Cracow Academy of Fine Arts. There, in the atelier of Józef Pankiewicz, she met great artists, such as Józef Czapski, Marian Gierowski, and many others: Józef Czapski, Marian Szczyrbula, Tadeusz Potworowski or Jan Cybis (her future husband). It was this group that formed the Paris Committee in 1923. From 1924, the so called "Kapists" organized their own artistic events. From 1924 the so-called "Capists" organized their exhibitions in Paris and Geneva. They remained in the French capital until 1931.

After returning to Poland the painter's works were presented, among others, at the Institute of Art Propaganda in Warsaw and at an individual exhibition in Paris at the Galerie Renaissance. In 1945 the artist was nominated as an associate professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow, and between 1960 and 1962 she was the dean of the faculty of painting at this school.

Character of creativity

The character of Hanna Rudzka Cybis's art fits in with Colorism (Kapism), which triumphed in Polish art between the two World Wars. Colour played the most important role in this trend, as it "shaped the form". The subject was supposed to be extremely simple. The Capists, together with Hanna Rudzka-Cybisowa, created landscapes, still lives, portraits and figural scenes in interiors.
