Alexander Calder was an American sculptor, painter, illustrator and printmaker, associated with the Abstraction-Creation group and a major representative of kinetic art. He studied mechanical engineering, then enrolled at the Art Students League in New York in 1923. In 1926 he went to Paris, where he became friends with Joan Miro. In 1930 he was in the studio of Piet Mondrian, who impressed him greatly and got him interested in abstract art. He was invited to become a member of the Abstraction-Création group and presented his first mobile at an exhibition.

He created paintings, prints and spatial forms, initially static (stabile) and then moving (mobile).
