Alfons Karpiński was a Polish painter who specialized in portraying women, he also painted landscapes and still lifes. Between 1891 and 1899, he studied at the School of Fine Arts in Kraków under Florian Cynk, Izydor Jabłoński, Władysław Łuszczkiewicz and Leon Wyczółkowski. He also studied abroad: under Anton Ažbé in Munich (1903) and under Kazimierz Pochwalski in Vienna, later also in Paris. In the first phase of his creation, he painted symbolic pictures, in Paris he found his unique way for a female portrait (idealised, sometimes even schematic).
