Giotto was an Italian painter and architect, best known for his frescoes in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua and the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi. According to legend, the young talented boy's teacher was Cimabue. The painter is regarded as a precursor of modern painting. In his compositions, he dispensed with golden backgrounds and placed great importance on perspective and the depiction of the emotions of the figures.
