Jan Władysław Chełmiński was a Polish battle painter. He received his artistic education from Juliusz Kossak in Warsaw, and in autumn 1873 he went to the Academy in Munich. In 1888, he left for London and began to use a different spelling of his surname there - Jan V. Chelminsky. Since 1915 he settled permanently in New York. He painted mainly military and ballistic scenes (the period of Napoleonic wars and the Duchy of Warsaw). He was less interested in genre painting, hunting scenes and book illustration.
