Jan Lebenstein was a Polish painter who studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (1948-54) under Artur Nacht-Samborski. His debut took place at the exhibition "Against War, Against Fascism" at the Warsaw Arsenal in 1955. Jan Lebenstein practised an original variety of figurative painting, incorporating surrealist and abstract elements. In 1964-1965, he painted 'Bestiary', a series of textured, archaic creatures reminiscent of prehistoric excavations, after which he incorporated human and fantasy figures into his paintings.
