Lorenzo Ghiberti, owner of Lorenzo di Bartolo, was an Italian art theorist and artist. He left an unfinished three-part treatise "Commentari", which was a summary of the work of Italian artists of the 14th century. In 1401, Ghiberti won a competition to design and make a bronze door (north) for the baptistery at Florence's S. Maria del Fiore church. Seven artists participated in this competition, but only two panels from the competition have survived, by Lorenzo Ghiberti and Filippo Brunelleschi, then very young artists, only twenty years old.
