Lovis Corinth was a German painter and printmaker, an Impressionist, and a major influence on German Expressionism. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Königsberg and in Berlin, Weimar and Munich. He created works on mythological and religious themes as well as landscapes, nudes, portraits and still lifes. In 1915 he was elected president of the Berlin Secession. In the first years of his artistic activity he was strongly influenced by the paintings of the old Flemish and Dutch masters. Later he turned clearly towards impressionism and then devoted himself to expressive painting.
