Martin Schongauer
First and last name
Martin Schongauer
Date of birth
1435, Colmar
Date of death
1491, Breisach

Martin Schongauer was a German painter and engraver, one of the first German engravers. He is believed to have trained as a painter with a local master in Colmar, Caspar Isenmann (d. 1472), a neighbour of his parents, who was greatly influenced by the paintings of Rogier van der Weyden. Some 116 engravings by the artist are now recognised. Most of them were religious in nature, but there were also satirical compositions showing comical scenes from life (such as a fight between two journeymen).
