Taras Shevchenko is a national hero of Ukraine; he was a poet, ethnographer and painter. He promoted Ukrainian independence and spent most of his life in prison and exile. He wrote novels and dramas in Russian, while he wrote poetry in Ukrainian. Shevchenko's artistic oeuvre includes genre scenes, portraits and landscapes.
