If you have ever been to Centre Pompidou, you must have seen the reconstruction of André Breton’s atelier. Full of artefacts from different cultures, including African masks and sculptures, it is a great example of Western-European fascination with what’s exotic and foreign. The appreciation of African art by artists and collectors from all around the world continues.

Warsaw exhibition of photographs of African sculptures

Now, just till 4th of February, you can admire some of the original works from Rzewuskis’ collection, as well as their compelling photographs by Piotr Sadurski on "Between Art and Possession" exhibition in Warsaw.

This exhibition, held in Koszykowa Library points out a very specific problem considering objects from African continent, or foreign cultures in general. Aestheticized, elegant pictures bring out their beauty and decorative potential – they don’t resemble simple photographic documentations which an ethnographer or anthropologist would desire. At the same time we have to remember that these objects are not considered as art by their authors or original users. They are made for religious purpose, they don’t have titles, and they are not viewed as a fancy accessory.

Their slightly disturbing, yet alluring charm is related to the theme depicted – demons. These grotesque "creatures" are examples of shetani style (shetani means "satan"/"evil spirit"). Created by Makonde people of Tanzania, Mozambique and Kenya, they show spirits of East African mythology while still being popular among art buyers, collectors and artists.
