A copy of the Lascaux cave with prehistoric paintings opens. The hope of preserving the real prehistoric paintings while keeping tourism moving is the opening on 15 December 2016 of a museum in which the main attraction is... paintings created using 3D technology. Work on this project continued uninterrupted for two and a half years.
Discovered by accident in 1940, the Lascaux cave in Aquitaine (Montignac, France) was quite a sensation. The prehistoric paintings depicting hunting scenes, as well as the famous bulls, are believed to be the oldest drawings in the world, some 20,000 years old. A huge concern for historians was the increasingly deteriorating quality of the cave. The mysterious paintings were deteriorating when exposed to carbon dioxide and excessive light.
Since the 1980s, work has been going on to make copies of the drawings. Access to the real cave has only been granted to scientists studying the images of the bulls.
