Passe-partout is a flat, thin frame made of paper that covers the edges of the framed work.

Why is passe-partout used?

The main purpose of using passe-partout is to protect the object and separate it from the glass of the frame. It is of the greatest importance in the case of photographs which are extremely easily damaged in direct contact with glass.

Does passe-partout increase the visual attractiveness of the work?

Passe-partout plays a decorative role, influencing the visual attractiveness of the work and its elegant exposition. Thanks to a special cardboard frame, most often rectangular in shape with a characteristic cut-out, the shadow falling on the drawing, painting or photograph is reduced, which allows to achieve an objective presentation effect in terms of e.g., colors used on the artwork.
