Józef Kosiński, born in 1753 in Kraków, was an outstanding Polish painter and miniaturist. He came from a noble family, the son of Michał Kosiński and Marianna Jaraczewska, bearing the Rogala coat of arms. He began his artistic education under the guidance of the renowned painter Marcello Bacciarelli.
Kosiński gained recognition as the court painter of King Stanisław Augustus, for which he was awarded the "Merentibus" Medal. His work included numerous portraits of the king and other notable figures, such as Tadeusz Kościuszko, Izabela Czartoryska, and General Maurycy Hauke. In Warsaw, he operated an art studio where he taught many students, leaving the completion of some portraits to their hands.
Kosiński also painted several oil portraits, including one of Tadeusz Kościuszko, as well as portraits of his wife Maria, his son Jan, and a self-portrait. Most of his works are housed in museums in Warsaw and Kraków, where they are appreciated for their artistic quality and historical significance.
Józef Kosiński passed away on April 1, 1821, in Warsaw and was buried at Powązki Cemetery, although there are rumors that his grave may also be located at the Świętokrzyski Cemetery. His artistic legacy remains a lasting testament to Polish art of the 18th and 19th centuries.
