In the spring, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence will show more works by women artists. The museum wants to redress the balance that has not been maintained over the years and put women's work at the forefront. The first exhibition will open on 8 March (and run until 30 April), International Women's Day.
Plautilla Nelli's exhibition will feature works of the Florentine Renaissance painter. More than a dozen of Nelli's paintings have recently been found in various churches and museums across Italy. The exhibition will be the first in a series of annual "open" exhibitions on women artists throughout history. The event is curated by Eike Schmidt, director of the Uffizi.
Two weeks later, on 24 March (until 28 April), the Uffizi Museum's sister museum, the Pitti Palace, will exhibit self-portraits by the feminist painter from Austria, Maria Lassnig. The artist often explores the female body in her works.
