A new art museum opened in Potsdam at the end of January, housed in the 18th-century building of the Barberini Palace. The premise behind the opening of the Barberini Museum is to put the city on the cultural map of Germany. The inauguration of the museum was met with great interest. Personalities such as Bill Gates and German Chancellor Angela Merkel were there.
One of the exhibitions, entitled "Classics of Modernity", presents paintings by artists such as Edward Munch, Max Liebermann and Andy Warhol. The exhibition tells the story of the development of modernist art. The exhibition presents the modernists' inspirations such as escapism, movement and structure. The curators have ensured that the works create a dialogue. Another exhibition, "Impressionism. Art of the Landscape" consists of works by the Impressionists: Monet, Renoir, Pissarr.
The Barberini Museum owes its existence to Hasso Plattner, a patron of the arts and collector who donated his own gallery to the city. It was he who paid for the reconstruction of the Barberini Palace, destroyed during the Second World War, which became home to the museum. In addition to Plattner's private collection, the museum will host three exhibitions a year. We already know the announcements of further events. These will include the exhibitions "The American Road to Modernism. From Hopper to Rothko" and "Behind the Mask" (works by artists from the GDR).
