We have great news for all art enthusiasts. In September the Culture Center Zamek in Poznań will be presenting an exhibition that focuses on Frida Kahlo – one of the most charismatic painters of the 20th century, a feminist icon, exemplary communist and foremost unusual woman with huge baggage of experiences. The exhibition will begin on 27 September 2017, and it will last until 31 January 2018.

Frida Kahlo and her oeuvre

Frida Kahlo never wanted to be an artist. A tragic bus accident spoilt her plans of studying medicine and left her immobile. Being bedridden she began painting and that way telling her life story full of disappointments, anger and pain. In art, she found an outlet for her feelings.

The self-portraits which dominate Frida's Kahlo oeuvre are full of incredible expression. She tried to inject into them some sadness and resignation filling her everyday life. She said: „I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best”. Allegorical artworks reflect both the most intimate desires of Kahlo and her worse fear. They present the life full of despair – for the child she could never have, and for her husband, who loved his job more than anything.

Despite traumatic experiences, she was a strong and independent woman, known for her communist affiliations. In many of Frida's paintings, she bravely emphasized her own femininity. She didn't avoid difficult subjects as well – with brutal sincerity she painted bloody scenes of childbirth and miscarriage.

Exhibition in Poznań

The organizers ensure that except for Frida Kahlo's masterpieces, we will see the artworks of people from her immediate environment: the paintings and drawings of the revolutionary muralist – Diego Rivera, the photographs of Bernice Kolko and the paintings and graphics of Fanna Rabel. The exhibition will include the Mexican art loaned from private collections and public institutions, such as National Museum in Warsaw.
