Fantasy is a genre that the art of painting can also be found in. The term usually refers to the newest art, created after the year 2000. The artists of fantasy art are often inspired by fantasy literature, grotesque, subconscious, dream state and the fairy tale world.

Fantasy – genres

The genre of fantasy is usually divided into science fiction, inspired by technology, and fantasy, drawing on mythology and folklore. In art magical realism is also common, referring to the imagery of the unusual, and astonishing. Magic realism abandons mimesis, blurring the line between what is real and what is fantastic. This type of art has traces of imaginative surrealism, which in its artistic vision is created by the author.

What is the inspiration for fantasy art?

Fantasy is a diverse genre of art that draws inspiration from the supernatural. Mythology, legends, folklore, scientific and technological progress, futurism, utopia, or anti-utopia. And also, fairy-tale imagery, symbolism, surrealism – these are just some of the elements that delight the lovers of fantasy in art, whose number grows every year. In the past, art collectors often viewed fantasy art in terms of " lower" art, now investing capital in post-apocalyptic landscapes. 

Infinite imagination of fantasy art creators

The wonder of the fantastic world often creates an element of absurdity, nonsense –something that is not possible in the real world. Supernatural phenomena, romanticism, gothic, but also fairy-tale, daydreaming, irrationality. The world of fantastic art is represented abroad by Richard Dadd, Salvador Dali and René Magritte, and in Poland by Jacek Szynkarczuk, Tomasz Sętowski, Jarosław Jaśnikowski, Rafał Olbiński and Jacek Yerka. The paintings of these artists create a unique atmosphere, evoke intense emotions and inspire to an unusual experience of reality.
