The ring is one of the oldest decorations known to mankind. The ring not only adorned the hand of the wearer, but also carried symbolic meaning. Presented at engagements, weddings or swearing-in to high positions, it became a token of the recipient's new position and a manifestation of their new status to those around them. It also signified membership of a particular group or community. Rings were also attributed magical properties, often due to the material of manufacture and the stone set.

What is a ring?

A ring is a type of ornament in the form of a small hoop that is worn on the finger. Rings are most often made of precious metal, such as gold, and the stone set is a polished gemstone, such as a diamond or emerald.

Rings, apart from their decorative and symbolic function, also had purely utilitarian functions. For the ring could be the seal of the wearer, which replaced his signature. The appropriate engraving reflected on a document replaced the handwriting. This is how the signet ring came into being - a characteristic type of ring in the form of a small, personal seal framed in a frame.

Around the symbolism

Because of their form, rings were attributed many symbolic and magical meanings. They were linked to the concept of eternity because of their shape, which has neither an end nor a beginning. It was also believed that rings could be amulets and could be endowed with power - they could ward off or attract evil, depending on the intention enchanted in the object or the intention of the wearer. This belief was often combined with a belief in the magical properties of the materials used, which would manifest themselves in the finished ring.

In Poland, rings with patriotic symbolism were an interesting case. They were particularly popular during both world wars and the partition period. Decorated with symbolic motifs, they allowed people to convey their patriotic feelings in a veiled way. Today, rings are worn mainly for aesthetic reasons.
