Franz Carl Herpel, born in 1850, was a German marine painter. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Königsberg under Ludwig Rosenfelder. Throughout his life, he resided in Königsberg, regularly embarking on study trips to the seas of Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and England.

Herpel specialized in painting ships, including sailing vessels and warships, often depicting them on turbulent seas during stormy weather. He also created distinctive "portraits" of sailing ships, such as the "Prinz Adalbert" and "Leipzig," as well as warships like the "Battleship Friedrich der Grosse." Commissioned by the sultan, he painted "Turkish Torpedo Boat Engaging a Battleship."

He participated in exhibitions, including those at the Berlin Academy from 1878 to 1890 and major art exhibitions in Berlin from 1912 to 1914. Franz Carl Herpel passed away on February 4, 1933, in Königsberg.
