Hans Holbein (the elder) was a German painter and draughtsman of the late Gothic and Renaissance periods. He was the father of Hans Holbein (the younger), a famous portraitist. The painter created mostly religious paintings and portraits, but interestingly he also designed stained glass windows. His work is very much influenced by the late Gothic tradition, however there are also elements of the Dutch and Italian Renaissance. Holbein's paintings can be found in the most important museums in Europe, among others: Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, in Gemäldegalerie in Berlin or in the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest.
