Leonard Winterowski was a Polish battle painter who studied under Teodor Axentowicz at the School of Fine Arts in Kraków between 1895 and 1897. He became interested in war themes during the First World War, when he served as a war correspondent. In his works he usually used the technique of oil painting and watercolour. His compositions are characterized by expression and dynamics, most often he depicted episodes from the Polish-Bolshevik war.
