Leopold Gottlieb was a Polish painter of Jewish origin. He came from an artistically talented family, his younger brother was a painter Maurycy. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow under Jacek Malczewski and Teodor Axentowicz. Since 1904 he lived permanently in Paris, he was a representative of Ecole de Paris. In his works he often depicted themes from the Old and New Testament, and painted pictures related to the symbolism of passing and death. His portraits are characterized by deep psychology.
