Stefan Bakałowicz was a Polish painter who worked mainly abroad, a representative of academism. He was the son of Władysław Bakałowicz. He started his artistic education in Warsaw under the supervision of Wojciech Gerson, then he studied in Petersburg at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. In 1882, he settled permanently in Rome. He created there genre scenes from the life of ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt, he was strongly influenced by the work of Alma-Tademy. He also painted landscapes, portraits and oriental compositions.
