Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian painter and art theorist. He is considered one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art, probably after Hilm af Klint. In 1900 he was admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he studied under Franz von Stuck. He was a co-founder of the Munich Expressionist artist group ,,Der Blaue Reiter'' ("The Blue Rider"; 1911-14). From 1922 until the Nazis closed the university in 1933, he taught at the Bauhaus, the famous art and craft college.
