Yayoi Kusama is Japan's most prominent avant-garde painter, performer, creator of art installations, sculptor, writer and political activist. The most characteristic feature of her work is the motif of dots with with which she covers her works. Her art has been described as minimalist, surrealist abstraction and conceptual pop-art. It contains autobiographical content, reflecting on her mental disorders, including anxiety disorders, compulsive-obsessive disorder and sexual phobia. She emigrated to the United States in 1957. In 1993, she was the first artist to represent Japan at the Venice Art Biennale. Since the 1970s, Kusama has lived in a psychiatric hospital in Tokyo, constantly creating in a studio nearby.
