The company Georg Adam Scheid, founded by him in 1881, had its roots in Vienna, in the historic building at Gumpendorfer Straße 85, which was previously owned by Michael Markowitsch. After ending the partnership with Markowitsch, Scheid established his own enterprise, which quickly became one of Austria's most important producers of high-quality silverware. The company specialized in creating elegant accessories such as vesta cases, cigarette cases, vanity cases, and jewelry boxes. The products were highly valued for their craftsmanship, precise execution, and the use of niello, and the company gained recognition worldwide.
In 1888, to meet the growing production needs, Scheid opened a refinery specializing in the recovery of precious metals, which allowed him to supply his own company and export the refined metals to other countries. This move enabled the company to further develop and dominate the market in this field.
G. A. Scheid quickly became synonymous with luxury and refined craftsmanship. Under his leadership, the company became one of the key players in the silver market, and in later years – when Scheid retired, his sons continued his work.
Despite the difficulties associated with World War I, the company survived, and its refinery operated continuously. In 1962, after merging with Ludwig Roessler GmbH, a new company – Ögussa GmbH – was formed, which continues to operate today as one of the leading precious metal producers in Europe.
