'Steatyt' Ceramic Factory in Katowice
Name
'Steatyt' Ceramic Factory in Katowice

'Steatyt' Ceramic Factory in Katowice operated between 1947 and 1994 and was one of the few private porcelain factories during the communist era. In the early years, Steatyt produced copies of patterns from such European porcelain manufacturers as Rosenthal, but by the 1960s the factory had already developed its own unique artistic language, which included dishes with asymmetrical forms, full of dynamics and bold colours. The products of the Katowice factory are characterised by sculptural development of shapes, which are often given additional expression by fanciful, textural decoration, which was intended to hide the defects of the porcelain produced. In 2013, 'Steatyt' Ceramic Factory in Katowice was included on the list of "design icons of the Silesian Voivodeship".
