Whiting Co.
Name
Whiting Co.

Whiting Manufacturing Co. was founded by William Dean Whiting in 1840 in Attleboro, Massachusetts. Initially operating under the name Tifft and Whiting, the company underwent several name changes after Whiting’s partner retired in 1853. In 1866, it formally adopted the name Whiting Manufacturing Co. After a fire destroyed its factory in North Attleborough in 1875, the company moved its production to New York, which enabled further expansion.

Whiting Manufacturing Co. became renowned for its high-quality silver items, combining artisanal precision with elegance. Notably, designer Charles Osborne, one of the most influential figures in the American aesthetic movement, introduced distinctive elements to the company’s offerings.

Internationally acclaimed for producing jewelry and silver flatware, the firm established a reputation as a prestigious supplier of luxury products. In 1924, Whiting Manufacturing Co. merged with Gorham Manufacturing Company, creating one of the largest jewelry conglomerates in the United States and continuing its legacy of high-quality silver craftsmanship.
