On the initiative of three institutions: the National Museum in Warsaw, the National Museum in Cracow, Museum of Art in Łódź, in 2017 will begin the celebrations of the 100 years of Avant-garde in Poland, reminding us of the most important phenomena and artists, which achievements in the field of art radically changed the character of Polish culture. The UNESCO Polish Committee has accepted the invitation to become the honorary patron of the whole event.

Year of the avant-garde in Poland, a programme of celebrations

The programme of the celebrations seems very interesting. Already more than 50 institutions from all over the country have shown interest to join this special event. The Year of Avant-garde will be accompanied by numerous exhibitions, conferences, concerts, spectacles and festivals.

The avant-garde movement in Poland

The first manifestation of the avant-garde movement in Poland was The First Exhibition of Polish Expressionists opened on 4 November 1917 in Cracow. From among all participants emerged the group of Formists.

Despite enormous influence in shaping the visual arts, literature, film and theatre, the avant-garde remains still an unappreciated and incomprehensible phenomenon. The organizers believe that the celebrations of the 100th Polish avant-garde will reach a wider audience and change their attitude toward contemporary culture.
