At Artbidy, we welcome spring with David Hockney's art, full of gorgeous shades of green and lush, blooming trees. We take a closer look at the British artist's unique work, which was created during the spring of 2020. The time of pandemic isolation increased the artistic activity of the painter, who was then inspired by the beauty of the natural world which he captured in his works.

Hockney – a turn-of-the-century artist whose art does not age

David Hockney is one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. At the beginning of his career, he created works containing traces of expressionism, later he was associated with British pop-art. In the mid-1960s, he began to develop his characteristic style, distinguished by a particular sensitivity to light, and color. Hockney since then has focused mainly on realistic depictions of everyday life prosaic scenes.

The beauty of spring captured on iPad

Still searching for new means of expression, the 84-year-old artist turned to technology a while ago. In doing so, Hockney continually explores the new possibilities by which innovative applications can enrich his creative process. He first experimented with the digital brush back in 2009, painting on his iPhone and iPad. Thus, during the pandemic, he was already familiar with this medium, which allowed him to "paint" an astonishing number of 116 paintings. While staying at his estate in Normandy at the time, Hockney was inspired by the beauty of spring, which he observed through a window of his house.

"The Arrival of Spring" – Hockney's exhibition at the BOZAR Centre in Brussels

Exactly one year later, the works were exhibited at the Centre of Fine Arts (BOZAR) in Brussels. The works were printed on paper, in a format several times larger than the original sketches. Thus, the visitors had a chance to look at the smallest details of the works in person. The lines, dashes, and dots with which the artist created the branches, grasses and flowers are rather simple techniques. However, Hockney used these methods to create a series of works that are unique in composition and color, and in their synthesis embody the spring spirit.
