The Vatican Museums are about to host an important Andy Warhol exhibition about sacral motives in his art. The project features paintings from Warhol’s Last Supper series (1986), inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s Milan fresco of the Biblical scene, silkscreens of skulls, films and other archival materials.

Andy Warhol in Vatican City

The exhibition will take place in Rome, in the Braccio di Carlo Magno, and in the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. The show will open in 2019, and it will be a chance to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the opening of the US museum.

Barbara Jatta, the director of the Vatican Museums, says: “We are very interested in exploring the artist’s spiritual side. It is very, very important for us to have a dialogue with contemporary art. We live in a world of images and the Church must be part of this conversation."
