Hieronymus Bosch was an eminent Dutch painter standing on the border between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. He created mysterious, disturbing and original paintings. There are two streams in Bosch's oeuvre: ecclesiastical commissions, rather traditional in terms of iconography, and private commissions in which the artist let his imagination run wild - as they are populated by mysterious fantastic creatures with rich symbolism drawn from medieval art, the Renaissance, occultism and Eastern philosophy. The artist was a great inspiration for the Surrealists.
