Jan Dobkowski
First and last name
Jan Dobkowski
Date of birth
1942, Łomża

Jan Dobkowski is one of the most important contemporary Polish painters, whose work has significantly influenced the domestic art scene. He was born in 1942 Łomża and graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 1968, obtaining his diploma in the studio of Professor Jan Cybis. During his studies, he co-founded the group Neo Neo Neo with Jerzy Zieliński, which opposed traditional approaches to painting.

Dobkowski quickly developed a distinctive style based on intense color contrasts, mainly reds and greens, as well as fluid, organic forms inspired by nature and the human body. His works, saturated with eroticism and symbolism, balance on the edge of abstraction and figuration. Lively, dynamic compositions express a fascination with nature and primal vital forces.

The artist gained international recognition, and his works are held in prestigious collections worldwide, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York. In 1994, he received the Jan Cybis Award, which confirmed his exceptional position in Polish art.
