Nikifor Krynicki (real name: Epifaniusz Drowniak) was one of Poland's most distinguished primitive painters, celebrated worldwide as a master of naive art. Born in 1895 in Krynica-Zdrój, he remained deeply connected to his hometown, which not only served as his home but also as a profound source of artistic inspiration. A self-taught artist, Nikifor's work was underappreciated during much of his lifetime, but he ultimately became an icon of Polish naive art.

Nikifor was of Lemko descent and faced numerous challenges from an early age, including isolation, poverty, and hearing and speech impairments. Living a modest life, he used his art both as a means of self-expression and survival. He primarily painted with watercolor on small formats, often using found materials like scraps of paper or packaging, giving his works a unique quality that speaks to his resourceful creativity. His subjects typically include scenes from Krynica, local architecture, landscapes, churches, and self-portraits. His works are marked by strong outlines and vibrant colors, creating a blend of monumentality and nostalgia.

Despite initial indifference from critics, Nikifor's art was eventually discovered and appreciated by figures like Ukrainian painter Roman Turyn and later promoted by Andrzej and Ella Banach. Through their support and numerous publications and exhibitions (including in Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, and Warsaw), Nikifor achieved international acclaim. Today, his works are displayed in galleries and museums worldwide, and the Nikifor Museum, established in Krynica in 1995, honors his legacy.

Nikifor Krynicki passed away in 1968, leaving behind a body of work comprising tens of thousands of pieces that continue to captivate and inspire art lovers globally.
