Stanisław Fijałkowski is a Polish avant-garde painter and graphic artist, awarded an honorary doctorate at the Władysław Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź. Fijałkowski's initial work is characterized by frequent references to impressionism and cubism. Towards the end of the 1950s, he turns to abstract painting, later adding symbolic signs and geometric figures. He uses cool colors, his painting is harmonious, uniform, minimalist. Fijałkowski represented Poland in the Venice Biennale in 1972. In 1989 he was awarded the Jan Cybis Prize, and in 2005 he received the Gloria Artis Gold Medal for Merit to Culture.
