A sweets dish made in the Art Nouveau style, entirely of sterling silver, in the Whiting Co. goldsmith's workshop. (New York) at the beginning of the 20th century. A cake stand with a collar turned outwards, richly decorated with floral motifs, typical of the style. The precision and quality of workmanship testify to the highest craftsmanship in goldsmithing. Diameter: 18 cm. Height: 4 cm. Weight: 175 grams. On the bottom there are visible hallmarks for silver 925 (STERLING) and the workshop mark of the goldsmith's workshop WHITING CO. Very good condition, visible micro scratches, normal signs of use.
WHITING CO. - comes from the company Tifft & Whiting founded in 1840 by Albert Tifft and William Dean Whiting. The studio, located in North Attleboro, Massachusetts, was destroyed by a fire in 1875. The business relocated to New York City at 692-694 Broadway at Fourth Street. The most famous and most important designer of the company was Charles Osborne. In the 1880s, he worked for Tiffany for a while, then returned to Whiting. His designs are among the best and most sought-after Art Nouveau designs in the United States.
