Daniel & John Wellby is a company with a history dating back to 1827, when it was founded as a partnership between Joseph Clements and John Wellby at 57 King Street in Soho. Initially, the business focused on gold and silver refining as well as dealing. The partnership was dissolved in 1828, but John Wellby continued operations and, in 1834, registered his first mark with the Goldsmiths' Hall. In 1863, Daniel Wellby and John Henry Wellby joined the company and introduced new marks.
The company, located at 20 Garrick Street in Covent Garden, expanded rapidly, and in 1896/1897, it was converted into a limited liability company under the name D & J Wellby Ltd. During this time, the main directors were Daniel Wellby, John Henry Wellby, Edward Henry Wellby, and Howard Wellby. New marks were introduced in London (1896) and Sheffield (1897).
After the death of John Henry Wellby, his sons took over the company. Edward Henry Wellby, who had been a director since 1896, served as president until his death in 1940. His brother, Edward Victor Wellby, was granted exemption from the Goldsmiths' Company in 1901 and became the chief supervisor in 1930. His son, Guy Sinclair Wellby, joined the company in 1926, was granted exemption from the Goldsmiths' Company in 1931, and served as the chief supervisor starting in 1965.
The company moved to 30 Divers Street and 1 Hay Hill in 1965, and operations ceased in 1973/1974. Daniel & John Wellby remains a symbol of traditional craftsmanship, jewelry, and quality for many generations.
