The Hempel brothers

The Hempel Brothers’ Workshop was one of the most significant places in the history of pre-war jewelry in Poland. Founded by brothers Władysław and Stefan Hempel in Warsaw, it quickly gained great recognition due to the exceptional skills and collaboration of both brothers. Władysław Hempel, born in 1871, was one of the most talented students of the famous master Antoni Riedel. After completing his apprenticeship in 1890 and becoming a master in 1904, he opened a factory with his brother specializing in plating and silverware.

The workshop quickly earned a solid reputation, primarily due to Władysław's talent, as he focused on designing and producing artistic silverware, table silver, and other silver goods. Stefan, responsible for the business side, played a crucial role in the company’s commercial success. The brothers decided to abandon the production of plated items and focused on creating silver pieces, including custom artistic works.

The company expanded rapidly, initially operating from the Grand Theatre building, then relocating to Krakowskie Przedmieście 7. Eventually, they established a true silverware factory at Leszno 100, corner of Wronia 63, which became one of the most important production facilities in Warsaw. Unfortunately, the Hempel Brothers' Workshop was destroyed during the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, marking the end of the company's activities.

Despite the destruction of the workshop, many of their creations survived and still hold great value, not only for their aesthetic appeal but also as an important part of Polish historical heritage. The works of the Hempel Brothers are still sought after by collectors and art lovers worldwide.
