So far, at the newly opened Museum of Modern Art, we have been able to go to workshops or see performances. However, in just a few days, on February 21st, the first exhibition will enter its building... an ‘impermanent’ exhibition, i.e. presenting an insight into the museum's collection and expected to last until October. Thanks to a partnership with Audi Poland, admission to the opening will be free of charge – visitors have until February 17th to download free entrance tickets.
The organisers decided to divide the more than 150 works into 4 thematic chapters, making different attempts to interpret the collection.
The first part of the exhibition asks questions about the influence of art on the political reality. We will see, among others, Alina Szapocznikow's sculpture ‘Friendship’ from the Socialist Realist period, which used to stand in the main hall of the Polish Palace of Culture. The next section brings together works relating to consumer desires, also in socialist economies.
The third section, inspired by the work of sculptor Roman Stańczak, will talk about how modernity conditions the need for self-reflection and the search for diverse forms of spirituality. The final section will question the possibilities of modernity as expressed through abstract art. The works of Monika Sonowska and Maria Jarema will play a significant role there.
