Bearing the name cloisonné, cellular enamel was already used in the 2nd millennium BC. Also known in Chinese and Japanese art, it decorated objects from as early as the Bronze Age. It was very popular in Byzantium and in Georgia.

How is the decoration created?

In the cellular enamel technique, ornaments are created by soldering thin sheets or flattened wire to a substrate, forming cells. The cells thus separated are filled with a coloured paste, which is then fired. After sanding, a mosaic effect is achieved.
